My name is Josie Chavez. I live in Roswell New Mexico although I was
born in Las Vegas New Mexico. I grew up here. I then moved to Missouri
when I was married, and lived there for 17 years on a small farm. I
also lived in Salem Oregon for 20 years. In 1994, I moved back to
Roswell because I missed the area so much.
My interest in art developed at a very young age. All through school,I
was involved in art Classes. One teacher that I will never forget was
my inspiration for art. She taught seventh grade art. Her name was
Lois Ward. She was patient and kind. She entered two of my drawings in colored chalk at a fair, and both won blue ribbons.
I have used paint, oils, colored pencils, chalk acrylics and
tempura as well as crayon.
I am self-taught with a course through the Famous Artist School, a ten
week basic drawing class taught here by Alesia Freeland at the the Adult Center.
I have other interest too. I took a doll repair correspondence course
to repair composition dolls which I showed and sold at doll shows in
Salem and Portland. I made cloth "character dolls" and sold them at
Salem's State Fair and Bazaars. I make "twig dolls, unusual characters
and time consuming.
I owned two small businesses here in Roswell, both were second-hand and
collectibles stores.
I am a member of The Gallery, and of course the Roswell Fine Arts
League. My work has been shown at the Potters Guild Fair, Holly
Christmas Show, Elks Lodge and I will show at the Gallery through the
RFAL in August. Please come and see my work.
